A Brief History of Cannabis/Hemp Research
86-year-old Israeli chemist Raphael Mechoulam, a researcher at Hebrew University led the first major studies on cannabis and its uses for the treatment of disease. Because of this Israel is the leading source of information and research regarding cannabinoids and their potential uses to treat a variety of diseases and health conditions..
Mechoulam’s research has included co-discovering the endocannabinoid system, the largest receptor system in the human body. He also found that the human brain produces its own cannabinoids — compounds that stimulate the body’s receptor system. Some scientists at the NIH believe these compounds could alleviate dozens of illnesses, including schizophrenia, diabetes, cancer and multiple sclerosis because of this NIH is sponsoring and funding more study’s. The discovery and increased understanding of the endogenous cannabinoid system essentially legitimizes the study of a substance previously on the margins of scientific research.
Research on the potential health benefits and the use of hemp/cannabis for pharmaceuticals is relatively new in the United States. With that being said NIH and several universities and research groups are funding and studying the uses of cannabis. Among them is the University of Colorado at Pueblo who established the ICR in June 2016 through an innovative partnership between Colorado State University Pueblo, the state of Colorado, and Pueblo County.
With initial funding support from Pueblo County and the state of Colorado, the ICR is the nation’s first multi-disciplinary cannabis research center at a regional, comprehensive institution. The primary function of the Institute is the generation of knowledge that contributes to science, medicine, and society through investigation of the benefits and risks associated with cannabis. Research findings are used to translate discoveries into innovative applications that improve lives.
What is the Science of Hemp?
When we use the term “The science of hemp” we are referring to two distinct kinds of research. The first one is looking at traditional Cannabis which has more than 2% cannabinoids and the more traditional; fiber hemp which still contains cannabinoids but at a lower percentage. Both types have multiple uses and are being studied for use in pharmaceuticals, medical treatments, building materials, biofuels and phytoremediation.
AgraPharm is looking at a variety of cannabis/hemp related research so that we can point out clients in the right direction depending on what business line they want to be involved in. Through our contract growing program we will offer the ability of companies involved in the industry to grow specific strains of hemp as either feedstock to a current operation or as test plots for research. At present due to federal law we are limited to growing CBD Hemp. With that being said we are working on partnerships with researchers located in other states on breeding strains that can be used in cancer treating drugs.
