Important Considerations Before You Purchase Seed

Despite what you may have heard Hemp is not as simple as planting it and watching it grow. Please carefully read the information below before purchasing seeds

Growing Condition

Hemp prefers a mild climate, humid atmosphere, and a rainfall of at least 25-30 inches per year. Good soil moisture is required for seed germination and until the young plants are well established.

Soils

Industrial hemp can be grown on a wide variety of soil types. Hemp prefers a sufficiently deep, well-aerated, soil with a pH of 6 or greater, along with good moisture and nutrient holding capacity. Poorly drained soils, however, are not recommended as excess surface water after heavy rains can result in damage to the hemp crop. Hemp is extremely sensitive to flooding and soil compaction.

Soil Preperation

A fine, firm seedbed is required for fast, uniform germination of hemp seed. Conventional seedbed preparation and drilling are probably ideal. The seedlings will not emerge uniformly if the seed is placed at a depth greater than 2 inches. “No-till systems” can also be used with good results, but may be more vulnerable to erratic emergence depending on the growing season.

Time of Seeding

The best time to seed hemp should be dictated by the weather and soil conditions, rather than the date on the calendar. Hemp can be seeded as early as two weeks prior to corn provided that soil conditions are optimum. However, seeding should not begin until soil temperatures have reached a minimum of 42 – 46 °F (6 – 8°C). Hemp seed germinates within 24 to 48 hours, and emerges in 5 to 7 days with good moisture and warm temperature. Hemp grown for fiber should be seeded as early as possible while hemp for grain should be seeded later to minimize the height of the stalk.

Nutrition

To achieve an optimum hemp yield, twice as much nutrient must be available to the crop as will finally be removed from the soil at harvest. A hemp field produces a very large bulk of plant material in a short vegetative period. The nitrogen uptake is most intensive the first 6 to 8 weeks, while potassium and in particular phosphorous are needed more during flowering and seed formation. Industrial hemp requires 80 to 100 lbs/ac (90 to 112 kg/ha) nitrogen, 35 to 50 lbs/ac (39 to 56 kg/ha) phosphate and 52 to 70 lbs/ac (60 to 80 kg/ha) potash.

Weed Control

Industrial hemp is an extremely efficient weed suppressor. No chemicals are needed for growing this crop.  Industrial hemp is a low maintenance crop. There are no registered chemicals for weed control in hemp. A normal stand of 200 to 300 plants per square meter shades out the weeds, leaving the fields weed-free at harvest. You may also plant White Clover between stands of Hemp to suppress weeds and provide a cover crop that may be tilled back in for soil improvement.

Why We Use and Sell Non Feminized Seed

There is currently a lot of disagreement and controversy in the hemp world around the subject of ‘feminized’ seed. Hemp and cannabis oil production requires the female plant to produce flower/biomass and oil at peak levels.

When male plants pollinate female plants, energy is diverted from oil production to seed production, which significantly reduces the quantity and quality of flower, biomass and oil.

‘Feminized’ seeds were created to eliminate the growth of male plants and avoid the process of removing males from a crop before pollination can occur.

Feminized’ seeds are treated with colloidal silver, silver nitrate, or silver thiosulfate to produce predominantly female plants. From thousands of seeds, a feminized seed is intended to produce a tiny percentage of male plants, compared to seeds that are not treated with this method. Non‑feminized hemp seeds will produce a far higher percentage of male plants.

So which is better? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using feminized and non feminized seeds (seeds that are not chemically treated)

Advantages of Feminized Seed
  • Feminized seed produces mostly female plants.
  • Fewer male plants means less males to remove.
Disadvantages of feminized seed
  • Feminized seeds are more expensive than natural seeds. Cost per acre is $25,000 per lb or more!
  • Feminized seeds are still capable of producing males, so you have to remain vigilant. Even one male can ruin your crop.
  • With feminized seed, the lack of males confuses the females and some will even transform into a hermaphrodite and release pollen.
  • The farmer is unable to grow his own seed and must repurchase feminized seed annually, greatly increasing his annual crop costs.
  • There are industry concerns on the genetic implications of colloidal silver/ feminizing agents when applied to the seed producing plants.
  • Low quality seeds are being sold as feminized but are, in fact, producing large percentages of male plants.
  • Feminized seed is sterile, and is unable to climatize to specific microclimates.
Advantages of Unfeminized/Natural hemp seed
  • Lower cost. The cost to buy these seeds is about $1,500.00 ‑ $4,000.00 per acre or 10% less than feminized seeds.
  • No chemicals required to produce.
  • Farmers can produce their own seed year after year.
  • Female plants are healthier and more robust in the presence of male hemp plants during vegetative growth.
  • Natural hemp plants can climatize significantly in one to two generations.
Disadvantages of Unfeminized/natural hemp seeds
  • Large numbers of males must be removed before pollination occurs.
  • Note that if you growing for phytoremediation this becomes less of a concern.
What about clones? Will buying or producing female clones and eliminate the problem? Yes, that’s a great option. Clones do make life easier but they are not a cure all.
  • Clones cost substantially more to buy per unit than regular or feminized seeds.
  • To make clones yourself you’ll need indoor, temperature & humidity‑controlled areas with specialized equipment, labor & knowledge.
  • Clones are not as large or productive as plants grown from seed. They lack a deep tap root found in seeded plants resulting in a less stability.
  • Clones share the same DNA, so each plant will have the same weaknesses meaning that any diseases or problem can easily spread and destroy a crop.

The Bottom Line!

The hemp industry is an exciting, emerging industry. In any new industry, much confusion and misinformation abounds. At AgraPharm, we believe educating customers is paramount!  Well informed customers choose our products based on knowledge rather than a marketing craze.

Are feminized hemp seeds the way forward? Possibly.  We aren’t convinced that the added expense and risk is worth it…yet! With proper farming techniques, males can be safely removed before they release pollen. The “secret” to controlling male growth is planting manageable fields/lots.  For many new Hemp farmers, we suggest that your first year farm be less than 10 acres….preferably less than 5 acres.

Of course if you are purchasing seed for a phytoremediation project then the discussion about “feminized” versus “Non feminized seed is probably unimportant to you because you will most likely want to grow hemp for several years to meet your goals. Please not that we offer Phytoremediation consults because of the complexity of understanding how to dispose of your hemp once you have grown it , the testing to see what soil contaminants it has cleaned from the soil and an understanding of how to dispose of the hemp will be paramount.

Important Information About Seed Sales

Seeds are sold  for agricultural use only. We expect that all buyers will use proper agricultural practices as utilized within the fiber hemp, cbd, and phytoremediation markets. This means that if seeds fail to germinate due to improper handling and planting techniques utilized by the buyer we have no responsibility for such failure. We store seeds before sale in a proper environmentally controlled storage area and in air tight packaging.

You must provide requested paperwork regarding your license to farm Hemp according to your local, state and federal laws and regulations before we ship seed out to you.

Final shipping charges will be based upon weight, and location of delivery and will be estimated prior to final approval of your order. Final shipping charges are billed upon final approval of your order.
